3 It was a beautiful summer day, in the heat of August when Oliver and his friend Emma decided to go to the fair. “There will be so many animals to see at the fair! I just can’t wait until we get there Emma!” “Do you think we will have enough time to see all of the animals and get our ticket in time for the big show?” asked Emma. “I think we can do it Emma!” replied Oliver.

4 Oliver and Emma made their way to the fairgrounds hopefully in time to see the animals before the big show. “We need to count all of the animals before we miss the big show” said Oliver. “Well let’s get started so we can see all of the animals before they leave for the show!” smiled Emma.

5 “Oh wow. ” gasped Emma. “Look at those cows. 6 cows and 4 baby cows
“Oh wow!” gasped Emma. “Look at those cows! 6 cows and 4 baby cows. How many cows would that make all together?” asked Oliver. “10 cows all together Oliver!” answered Emma. Oliver and Emma quickly walked over to see the big cows. Farmer John even let them milk one of the cows! “Where should we go next, Oliver?” asked Emma. “Let’s see if we can find the horses!”

6 “Over here Emma. ” yelled Oliver
“Over here Emma!” yelled Oliver. “There are so many different kinds of horses! Look there are 5 brown horses and 4 black horses” said Emma. “How many horses does that make?” asked Emma. “9 horses!” Oliver said excitedly.

7 Oliver and Emma made their way down the midway towards the rest of the animals. They stopped to ride the Ferris wheel. “How many blue and red carts are on the Ferris Wheel, Oliver?” asked Emma looking up at the big ride. “Hmm” thought Oliver. “If we can see 4 red carts and 4 blue carts, how many carts are there all together?” asked Emma. “8 carts all together!” said Oliver. “I hope we get in a blue cart!” said Emma. “Let’s go find out!” Oliver and Emma rushed to the Ferris Wheel.

8 It was Emma’s turn to pick the animal next
It was Emma’s turn to pick the animal next. “Let’s go see the cute fuzzy bunnies, Oliver!” Emma led Oliver to the rabbit barn. “Look, these bunnies have different ears. These bunnies have short ears and these bunnies have long ears! 3 short eared bunnies and 4 long eared bunnies!” How many bunnies total? “7 bunnies all together!” answer Oliver.

9 Oliver found the chicken barn and was excited to hear the roosters crow. “Emma, look at this! It is a hen and she laid an egg!” said Oliver. “Over here Oliver, there are eggs with these hens” said Emma. “How many eggs do you see, Emma”. “5 eggs” Emma told Oliver. How many eggs do we have?” asked Oliver. “6 eggs all together!” examined Emma.

10 Oliver and Emma’s fair adventure was coming to an end, but they still had 3 animal barns to go. “Let’s go look at the baby pigs!” said Emma. Oliver and Emma walked into the smelly pig barn and found the little piglets. “4 baby pigs and a mommy pig!” said Oliver. “How many total pigs?” asked Oliver. “There are 5 pigs!” said Emma.

11 Emma found the sheep barn which was right beside the pig barn
Emma found the sheep barn which was right beside the pig barn. “Oliver I can hear the sheep! Let’s go!” Emma and Oliver went into the sheep barn and watched farmers as they groomed their sheep for the big show. 2 sheep were all ready for the show and 2 other sheep were getting ready. How many sheep did they see getting ready for the big show? They saw 4 sheep. Emma helped groom the sheep and Oliver watched the 4 sheep.

12 “Oliver, do you think we will make it in time for the big show
“Oliver, do you think we will make it in time for the big show?” asked Emma. “Yes, there is only one more barn to visit!” exclaimed Oliver.

13 One more barn to visit at the fairgrounds. “Emma we are almost done
One more barn to visit at the fairgrounds. “Emma we are almost done! The last barn, the goats”. “I don’t really like the goats, Oliver. I’m scared of them.” Emma said. “Don’t worry let’s go in just a little bit and see how many we can see”. Emma and Oliver went to the goat barn and saw 2 goats getting milked. Oliver smiled and was able to help milk the goats and Emma was no longer scared and got to milk another goat! How many goats were milked? 3 goats were milked!

14 Walking back down the midway, Oliver and Emma were hungry for something sweet. They saw the cotton candy booth and decided to get one cotton candy for each of them. How many cotton candies do will they have to buy? 2 cotton candies. 1 for Oliver and 1 for Emma.

15 “Well Oliver, this was a fun adventure at the fair
“Well Oliver, this was a fun adventure at the fair! We saw so many animals” said Emma. Emma and Oliver headed over to the big show. There was a lot of people standing in line. “Oliver, I don’t think we will be able to see the show! We even counted all of the animals that are in the show!” Emma said. “I have a surprise for you” smiled Oliver. He held out 2 tickets for the big animal show. “2 tickets for the show tonight!” said Oliver.

16 Emma and Oliver went to the great big animal show at the fair to end their day at the fair where 1 grand champion was crowned. “So, we did have enough time to count all of the animals and make it to the big show!” smiled Emma.

17 Additional Tools to solve the mathematical dilemma & Classroom use ideas
Mental Math Strategy: Students will participate in the questions throughout the story as Oliver and Emma travel and count and add animals at the county fair. Students could see animal puppets used in the classroom In prek have the theme of the week focus on a fair Visit and count animals at the fair for a field trip
