3 What is Advertising Advertising is any paid promotion of an idea, good, or service by an identified sponsor. An example of an idea would be ________________ An example of a good would be ________________ An example of a service would be ________________

4 What is Advertising? When companies are deciding on what promotion method will be effective in reaching their target market, advertising offers many possibilities. With a variety of media options, there is flexibility in delivering the message.

5 What is media? Media are the agencies, means, or instruments used to convey advertising messages to the public. The four types of media are: Print Broadcast Online – ( & social media ) Specialty - transit

6 Types of Media –Print Media
Newspapers – Generally a local medium allowing an advertiser to target hometown customers Geographically selective and inexpensive Effective for local businesses

8 Print Media Magazines - More regional and national in scope
Larger number of subscribers Ability to select a specific audience Magazines can be industry specific

Consists of billboards found inside stadiums and on roadways Offers the ability to geographically select an audience Major disadvantage is that the message must be short, concise and appealing

Good way to keep current customers aware of new products, services, or upcoming sales Enables advertisers to be highly selective when targeting a particular audience Disadvantage is that it can yield a low level response in relation to items sent. Also has an image problem. Junk mail!!!

15 Broadcast Media Radio - Reaches a segmented audience
Low cost and can communicate in many settings Major disadvantage is that is does not broadcast a visual image

TV - Major advantage is sight, sound, and motion Can target an audience based on a specific program Product Placement- ads scripted into movies and TV Major disadvantages: the cost, a 30 second commercial can run from $200,000 to $600,000 Clutter
