1 Mouths are quiet. Homework in your folder. Begin the quick review section of your notes. Raise your hand if you need something.

2 Quick Review Use the diagram at the right to answer questions 1 – 5. For questions 1 – 4, give the letter of the structure and its name. 1. Structure that packages protein to be sent out of the cell = B, Golgi Apparatus 2. Structure that breaks down food or invaders = C, lysosome 3. Structure where cellular respiration occurs = D, mitochondria

3 Quick Review 4. Structure where transcription happens = A, nucleus 5. What type of cell is this? How do you know? This is an animal cell. It lacks a cell wall, chloroplasts, and has no central vacuole.

4 Ecosystems and Adaptations
Lesson 6.3 – Biomes I

5 I can give the characteristics of various biomes (desert, grassland, tundra, and coniferous forest). (3a) 1. A biome is a large group of ecosystems with similar climates and organisms. a. The amount of precipitation (rain, snow, sleet) that an area receives and the temperature of the area determine the biome of the area. b. These abiotic factors determine the type of plants that can live in the area which determines the animals that can live in the area.

6 I can give the characteristics of various biomes (desert, grassland, tundra, and coniferous forest). (3a) 2. Desert a. Extremely dry, often very hot, large temperature variation b. Temperature variation is how much the temperature changes between night and day.

7 3. Grassland a. Moderate to high temperatures, some precipitation.
I can give the characteristics of various biomes (desert, grassland, tundra, and coniferous forest). (3a) 3. Grassland a. Moderate to high temperatures, some precipitation.

8 I can give the characteristics of various biomes (desert, grassland, tundra, and coniferous forest). (3a) 4. Tundra a. Extremely cold in the winter with slightly warmer temperatures in the summer, very little precipitation. b. Similar to a desert but very cold. Emphasize that tundras don’t have snow all year around.

9 I can give the characteristics of various biomes (desert, grassland, tundra, and coniferous forest). (3a) 5. Coniferous Forest a. Very cold winters and cool summers. Moderate amount of rain and snow.

10 I can give the characteristics of various biomes (desert, grassland, tundra, and coniferous forest). (3a) 6. It is possible to use a temperature v. time graph and a precipitation v. time graph to of for an area to determine its biome. a. Remember, the first thing to do with any graph is to read the axes.

11 WORK WITH US…NOT AHEAD OF US!
Guided Practice WORK WITH US…NOT AHEAD OF US!

12 I can give the characteristics of various biomes (desert, grassland, tundra, and coniferous forest). (3a) A scientist is trying to determine which biome a region is in and makes the following graphs. Help him determine which biome it is a part of.

13 I can give the characteristics of various biomes (desert, grassland, tundra, and coniferous forest). (3a) Each of the four biomes covered today are shown around the room. You will be given a card with a characteristic of one of these four biomes. When the music begins, you should move SILENTLY to the correct biome. When you arrive, check your classmates’ answers. There should be NO talking.

14 I-N-D-E-P-E-N-D-E-N-T PRACTICE
Do you know what that means?
