Germany Appeased No More
“…Ambassadors in Berlin had given German Foreign Minister Joachim von Ribbentrop an ultimatum. He was to tell Berlin that unless the Nazis withdraw, Britain and France would fulfill its promise of support to Poland. Von Ribbentrop said he would refer the message to Adolf Hitler. US President Roosevelt of the United States has sent an appeal to the governments of Great Britain, France, Germany, Italy and Poland urging them to announce publicly their determination not to launch air attacks on civilians. In reply the British and French governments say they intend to confine their bombing to military objectives, so long as their opponents do the same. “

WWII Begins! Germany invaded Poland for Lebensraum
France and England kept their word, protect Poland Hitler used his blitzkrieg to storm through Europe, beginning in Poland The blitz combines The Luftwaffe and fast moving ground forces Hitler, after the Spanish “dress rehearsal” continued to target both civilian and military zones
8
Phony War Hitler “blitzed” through Poland and then took the winter off. French and British waited at the Maginot Line for Hitler to attack. 1940, Hitler Blitzed again, storming through Normandy, Denmark and Belgium and the burst through the Maginot Line into France. Maginot Line was useless and allies had to retreat
9
Battle At Dunkirk British troops retreating from France
Cornered by blitz and the English Channel Hitler’s non-stop air raids made it difficult to escape, combined with the u-boat attacks. For nine days, British shipped forces across the Channel, using EVERY available vessel Rescued about 300,000 troops Showed the spirit of Dunkirk, boosted English moral, “Never Surrender”
11
Battle of France/Fall of France
Nazi’s swept into France, May 1940 British forces retreated to England France still disabled from WWI Nazi’s pushed down toward France Italy declared war on France, and attacked from south France emotionally devastated, physically weakened, militarily out matched France forced to surrender in same cart Germany did
12
Vichy Government French surrendered, German’s set up a satellite, (puppet) government in Vichy Charles de Gaulle led the “free French” who had escaped to England and set up a government –in –exile to help liberate French trapped by German forces Vichy government met with resistance inside France
13
On the Other Side While Hitler was storming through France and taking revenge for WWI, Stalin took land promised to him in Poland Mussolini attempted to take lands in Africa and Greece Hitler sent the “dessert fox” to help Mussolini in Africa and additional troops to help him in Greece
14
Battle of Brittan and Some New Technology
Sonar was developed to locate subs Radar developed to locate aircrafts Hitler wants to destroy England, knowing its their biggest European opposition Winston Churchill replaced Chamberlain as Prime Minister Churchill had for years suspected a Nazi/Hitler attack Hitler tried to blitz England by non-stop bombing from August 1940-June 1941 (Operation Sea Lion) Hitler tried to burst English morale, as was done in France, but Churchill urges citizens to never surrender
16
Blitz’s first Failure Operation Sea Lion was a failure for the Nazi’s
Could not damage English morale. Despite all the raids and destruction, Churchill urged citizens to go about daily business and never to surrender During this failure, Hitler chose to set his advancements on Operation Barbarossa… divorce time!
