Why? King was TOO FAR AWAY to rule effectively. They needed their own governments. After having TOWN MEETINGS, colonists formed their own governments, such as…. Virginia House of Burgesses (1619)- 1st elected assembly (law making body of colonists) in Jamestown, Virginia! Mayflower Compact (1620) - self-government, majority rule Fundamental Orders of Connecticut (1639) - 1st colonial constitution

SLAVERY-WHERE AND WHY? Developed primarily in the SOUTHERN COLONIES (agriculture) Why? Because Southern colonies were warmer with fertile soil good for cash crops Slaves were needed as labor on large plantations

New England: -Harsh WINTERS, ROCKY SOIL -FISHING, SHIPBUILDING, TRADE Middle Colonies: -FERTILE soil, forests -WHEAT, GRAINS, lumber Southern Colonies: -FERTILE soil, mild climate, long GROWING SEASON -AGRICULTURE
