3. 1st English Settlements
Jamestown, Virginia:
1st SUCCESSFUL ENGLISH COLONY (Virginia)
Founded for ECONOMIC reasons-to find gold
1620…Plymouth, Massachusetts
Founded by the Pilgrims/Puritans
RELIGIOUS Freedom
Jamestown was founded in 1607
Jamestown was founded for wealth and economic gain

4. Other Colonies Founded for Religious Freedom
Rhode Island: ROGER WILLIAMS- Founded for religious freedom
Pennsylvania: William Penn—Founded for QUAKERS
Maryland: LORD CALVERT- Refuge for CATHOLICS

5. Growth of Representative Government
Why? King was TOO FAR AWAY to rule effectively. They needed their own governments. After having TOWN MEETINGS, colonists formed their own governments, such as….
Virginia House of Burgesses (1619)- 1st elected assembly (law making body of colonists) in Jamestown, Virginia!
Mayflower Compact (1620) - self-government, majority rule
Fundamental Orders of Connecticut (1639) - 1st colonial constitution

6. SLAVERY-WHERE AND WHY?
Developed primarily in the SOUTHERN COLONIES (agriculture)
Why?
Because Southern colonies were warmer with fertile soil good for cash crops
Slaves were needed as labor on large plantations

7. The THREE Colonial Regions
New England:
-Harsh WINTERS, ROCKY SOIL
-FISHING, SHIPBUILDING, TRADE
Middle Colonies:
-FERTILE soil, forests
-WHEAT, GRAINS, lumber
Southern Colonies:
-FERTILE soil, mild climate, long GROWING SEASON
-AGRICULTURE

8. Free Enterprise
The ability to practice business without government control.
How did this come about?
-Distance from England
-Salutary Neglect
-Colonists had already established their own laws….why not businesses too?
