Cut out and match words from each side to make interesting phrases. Point out that some go together more naturally than others. Tell pupils they are going to hear a poem with lots of interesting phrases in it.

Read aloud to pupils. Can they spot any alliteration
Read aloud to pupils. Can they spot any alliteration? Can they find any similes? (It’s hinges are the toe joints of dinosaurs). Highlight adjectives. Nonsense sentences.

Children to initially work on developing phrases – lots of talk for writing and sharing sentences. Sets of cards: 1st – adjective describing chocolate (blue) 2nd – chocolate brand names (dark green) 3rd – connective and prepositions (red) 4th – any adjective( light green) 5th – any noun (yellow) Groups to pick a card from each pile to create a sentence. DISCUSS – do they like it? Is it too random? Do they want to alter it slightly? Pairs to create a ‘chocolate’ noun phrase (like the ones from yesterday), and a nonsense noun phrase (e.g. sleeping volcano); choose a connective (or preposition) to join the two phrases together. e.g. a silky smooth Crunchie under a sleeping volcano. Pupils then work as a pair to create a silly 3 line verse. Challenge, add another line independently.

We are going to write out own ‘magic box’ poem about chocolate! Teacher to demo writing the first verse of our own version of ‘The Magic Box’ but for a chocolate box instead… Children to ‘THINK, PAIR, SHARE’ in order to help create the third line e.g. I will put in my box, a sweet bar of snickers and a bag of tasty chocolate buttons.
