“Line Up” Instructional Strategy #1
8
Line Up, What is it? Encourages critical thinking, communication skills, and teamwork Students must place steps of procedure, dates, or events in order Large cards with step/date/event are distributed Everyone is given one card Group forms a line in correct order Variations include making it a competition between groups
9
Line Up, How is it Used? After all cards have been lined up, provide the correct responses. Students can record the additional responses in their notebook. Student logic and process of developing order is discussed.
10
Line Up Basic Rules Decide the order of the given cards as quickly as possible in the designated time period Don’t criticize any ideas The more discussion the better Optional: Have students write down their own idea of the order first before making it a group activity
11
Line Up Advantages Encourages students to review all steps/order of a task or topic Develops interpersonal communication skills Offers movement and gets students out of their seats
12
Line Up Disadvantages Lack of individual accountability
Challenging to find a problem big enough for the class to work as a whole Negative feedback from other students with a wrong answer
13
Line Up Suggestions for Use
Used after a topic has been taught to review the steps/order of a task Limit instructor input during the ordering to allow students to develop the order on their own Set guidelines to elicit on-task behavior May be used with most content areas
14
Line Up Materials and Management
Large cards with steps/events/etc. listed Additional paper for students to record their own notes Management Give each student a card Remove obstacles (ex: chairs, desks) to allow safe movement Scan room to promote on task behavior
