The Plotline
2
Ladies and gentlemen…this is your captain speaking…
Are you prepared for the ride of your life?!
3
Welcome to the plotline!
The PLOTLINE is the world’s #1 roller coaster, and it’s here for you today…FREE OF CHARGE. Be warned! The PLOTLINE is not for the faint of heart…
4
Before our journey of awesomeness Begins…
Some safety issues you should be aware of… The PLOTLINE consists of 5 separate stages: Exposition Rising Action Climax Falling Action Resolution
5
Stage 1: exposition You are currently experiencing stage 1: Exposition
Exposition is the portion of the story that introduces the characters, setting, and basic situation. On the PLOTLINE, you should think of the warnings and safety instructions before the ride begins as part of the Exposition. When you hear the word EXPOSITION, I want you to pull down your safety harness
6
Exposition examples Star Wars Tangled
Tangled Can you think of any other examples of EXPOSITION?
7
Stage 2: Rising action What would any roller coaster be without the tell-tale click click click-ing of the climb to the first drop? This…is Rising Action. When you hear the words RISING ACTION, I want your to hold on to your harness, lean back in your seats, and click click click to the top. In stories, RISING ACTION is the events in the plot that introduce the conflict (think struggle).
8
The long climb Rising action in a plot is a series of relevant incidents that create suspense, interest, and tension in a story. In literary works, a rising action includes all decisions, character flaws, and background circumstances that work together to create turns and twists leading to a climax.
9
conflict Conflict is a struggle between opposing forces in a story.
The conflict can be internal and/or external. An internal conflict is a conflict within the central character In Inside Out, Joy struggles with letting Rylie experience any emotion other than Joy. An external conflict occurs when the central character struggles against another person/force Simba’s final battle against Scar in “The Lion King” is an example of external conflict.

Examples of rising action
Beauty and the Beast Shrek What other examples of RISING ACTION can you think of?

Stage 3: Climax We have now reached the top of the first hill on the PLOTLINE. We call this point the Climax. At this time, please raise your hands in the air and prepare to scream in delight The CLIMAX is the point of highest interest or suspense in a story Climax is also referred to as a turning point CLIMAX is the point at which a conflict or crisis reaches its peak that calls for a resolution
12
HOW MANY HILLS DO ROLLER COASTERS HAVE???
Like any good roller coaster, the PLOTLINE has more than one climax. Since characters experience multiple conflicts/struggles during the story, a single story can have more than one climax. CLIMAX can occur at any point in the story, but the Main conflict usually reaches its CLIMAX near the end.
13
Examples of climax Hunger Games The Little Mermaid
The Little Mermaid What other examples of CLIMAX can you think of?
14
Stage 4: falling action Once you climb to the CLIMAX, you have to fall back down to experience the full ride on the PLOTLINE When you hear the words FALLING ACTION, I want you to lean forward like you’re going down in a roller coaster FALLING ACTION usually takes the form of the action and dialogue following the climax that leads the reader into the story's end. The hero has reached his/her goal, whatever his/her goal may have been. He climbed the mountain, he won the heart of the girl of his dreams, he won the big game or he found the buried treasure. But the story isn't over yet. The falling action occurs right after the climax. It is what happens after the main problem of the story has been solved.

Examples of falling action
Harry Potter Big Hero 6 What examples of FALLING ACTION can you think of?

Stage 5: Resolution Stage 2, 3, and 4 can be experienced multiple times on the PLOTLINE But like EXPOSITION, RESOLUTION only happens once… When the car returns to the docking station, I want you to jolt like you’ve come to a sudden stop
17
Resolution The RESOLUTION is the final part of a story in which the strands of the plot are drawn together and matters are explained or resolved All conflicts are resolved, the ride is over... Please keep arms and legs in the car while we dock back in the station
18
And now, you are ready to ride... the plotline
