On December 5, 2013, we interviewed Detective Brian Byarski, he explained there isn’t a major drug problem in the school but estimated at least 50% of the student body has used, abused, or experimented with drugs. Byarski also said an estimated twelve students a year are caught in school with drugs, most are from the lower classmen. We also learned that the most commonly found drug in school is marijuana, because of its unique scent.
Senior Editor of CBSnews.com, David Morgan, and the Associated Press of NBC news uses a study done by Columbia University’s National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse to write about drug problems in the public school system. Columbia University surveyed 1,063 teenagers from 12 to 17 years
old and 550 parents between April 2nd and May 13th. The study found that eight in every 10 high schoolers and 44 percent of middle schoolers have witnessed illegal drug use, dealing or possession, or have seen students high or drunk on school grounds.

Salynn Boyles uses a study from National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse which is conducted every year, around when school starts. The study reports about one in four teens attending public schools reported the presence of drugs in school. The study also suggests that that about 5.7 million children attend schools with drugs.

It’s estimated that least 50% of our students have done drugs
Only an estimated 12 students are being caught.
Schools won’t be drug free unless security is tighter than prison security

11. Recommendations: School staff be more vigilant looking for drugs
Parents should be more wary of what their kids purchase
