1 RNA and Protein Synthesis
Transcription and Translation

2 5/22/2013 Warm-Up Here is a strand of DNA: ATG CTC GGC AAT TCA TGG
Write the complementary strand. What binds the complementary strand to the original strand? Now that you have two strands, what is this molecule called? Draw the four steps of DNA replication. Label the original and new strands of DNA. Be sure to show the enzymes used in DNA replication.

3 The Processes of DNA

4 DNA, Genes, RNA, and Proteins

5 RNA - Ribonucleic Acid

6 RNA - Ribonucleic Acid RNA relays messages that are contained in DNA
RNA differs from DNA in 3 ways: The sugar of RNA is ribose RNA is single-stranded Contains the base Uracil in place of Thymine Uracil forms hydrogen bonds with Adenine

7 3 types of RNA mRNA - Messenger RNA (linear)
Carries DNA code to ribosome. tRNA - Transfer RNA (folded) Brings amino acids to the mRNA to build proteins. rRNA - Ribosomal RNA Combines with dozens of proteins to form ribosomes, where more proteins will be made.
