4 Christopher Columbus Discovers the Americas!!!!! On Accident, but its ok!!!!!!
Spain, ruled by King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella, want a share of the Asian spice trade. So they send C Bus, an Italian sea captain to find a quick route to Asia. C Bus plans to reach the East by sailing West.

5 In fourteen hundred ninety-two Columbus sailed the ocean blue
In fourteen hundred ninety-two Columbus sailed the ocean blue. He had three ships and left from Spain; He sailed through sunshine, wind and rain. He sailed by night; he sailed by day; He used the stars to find his way. A compass also helped him know How to find the way to go. Ninety sailors were on board; Some men worked while others snored. Then the workers went to sleep; And others watched the ocean deep. Day after day they looked for land; They dreamed of trees and rocks and sand. October 12 their dream came true, You never saw a happier crew! "Indians!  Indians!"  Columbus cried; His heart was filled with joyful pride. But "India" the land was not; It was the Bahamas, and it was hot. The Arakawa natives were very nice; They gave the sailors food and spice. Columbus sailed on to find some gold To bring back home, as he'd been told. He made the trip again and again, Trading gold to bring to Spain. The first American?  No, not quite. But Columbus was brave, and he was bright.

6 Columbus Reaches the Americas
At 2 A.M. on October 12th, a lookout spots whites cliffs on the horizon. At dawn, Columbus rowed ashore and planted the banner of Spain on the beach

7 The West Indies Columbus actually landed in the West Indies, where he found signs of gold!!!

8 New Spanish Colonies A colony is a group of people who live in a distant land but are still ruled by their home land. Hispaniola, as it was called, was located in present day Haiti and the Dominican Republic.

9 A Lasting Impact Vasco Nunez de Balboa –Claims the pacific Ocean for Spain Ferdinand Magellan – First crew to circumnavigate (circle) the globe. Columbian Exchange – Encounters between people of the Eastern and Western hemispheres.

10 What About the Natives? Native Americans played a huge part in the success of the Spanish colonies. They supplied Europeans with valuable food crops such as corn. Today, almost half the world’s food crops come from plants that were originally grown in the Americas.
