The need:
Aviarc’s software developers used open source containers for development and supported containers for deployment because supported containers were too slow to restart and propagate changes. However, inconsistencies between the two environments led to delays in deployment, which was unacceptable considering the company’s reputation as a rapid development group.
The solution:
Aviarc accepted IBM’s invitation to participate in the Beta of IBM® WebSphere® Application Server Liberty Profile, a small-footprint development environment. It enables developers to develop, assemble, test and publish web applications to a lightweight runtime which has fidelity to the full WebSphere Application Server profile.

Small-footprint IBM WebSphere Liberty profile enables rapid development
Company background: IBM Business Partner Aviarc Global, Ltd. is a software development company with close to 70 employees. The business is based in New Zealand, with offices also in Australia and a recently established beachhead in Singapore.
The need
Aviarc faced the same challenge that other software development companies deal with: convincing developers to run supported containers in their development environment. The developers were apt to get frustrated using supported containers because of the length of time it took to restart servers and to propagate changes. So they developed using open source containers such as Apache Tomcat and deployed using supported containers such as IBM® WebSphere® Application Server. However, changes in configuration and in libraries delayed the deployment process, which was unacceptable given the company’s reputation as a rapid development group.
The solution
Aviarc accepted IBM’s offer to participate in the Beta of WebSphere Application Server 8.5 Liberty Profile. Aviarc anticipated that it would take two days to install the product and get it up and running, but it took 10 to 15 minutes. The Beta was easy to configure and robust. The small footprint and fast restart time help the company come swiftly out of development and straight into deployment, eliminating delays due to inconsistencies between environments. Aviarc takes advantage of the embedded server deployment approach provided by the Liberty profile. The company can ship the entire deployment (application and runtime) in one package, which saves on administrative and deployment overhead and also limits surprises around deployment time. The company can trust that what it tested is actually being deployed, which makes for greater reliability than with alternative methods.
