Forming Chemical Bonds
Chemical Bond – the force that holds two atoms together Electron-dot structure Octet Rule Ions Cation – positive (+) Anion – negative (-)
3
The Formation & Nature of Ionic Bonds
Ionic Bond – The electrostatic force that holds particles together in an ionic compound Cation & Anion
4
Naming Ionic Compounds
Name the cation first and the anion second. Monatomic cations use the element name. Monatomic anions take their name from the root of the element name plus the suffix –ide. Group 1a & 2a metals have only one oxidation #. Transition metal and metals on the right side of the periodic table often have more than one oxidation #. More than one oxidation # use roman numerals If the compound contains a polyatomic ion, simply name the ion. p. 257
