An indicator framework for assessing ecosystem services in support of the EU Biodiversity Strategy to 2020 Joachim Maes European Commission, DG Joint Research Centre, Ispra
3
Conclusion This paper demonstrates that there is potential to develop a first ecosystem assessment on the basis of existing data if they are combined in a creative way.
4
Conclusion However, substantial data gaps remain to be filled before a fully integrated and complete ecosystem assessment can be carried out.
5
Non-conclusion The MAES process lacks scientific rigour

Integrated ecosystem assessment: condition and services
We need a working definition for ecosystem condition based on policy targets

Integrated ecosystem assessment: condition and services
Several approaches Mapping the evidence Detecting spatial congruence Narratives and theoretical exercises (matrix) Measurements
15
Why mapping is essential:
Ecosystems, ecosystem condition, ecosystem services and benefits of ecosystems are not equally distributed over space (and time)

Conditions are favourable
