2 Shared Reading The teacher reads the big book with children in a whole heterogeneous group modeling reading strategies, language functions, and language structures and teaching skills in concepts. Children join in the reading when they are ready and participate in discussions.

3 Reading Strategy—Retell
Objective Reading Strategy—Retell (10) Reading/Comprehension of Informational Text/Expository Text. Students analyze, make inferences and draw conclusions about expository text, and provide evidence from text to support their understanding. Students are expected to: (B) retell important facts in a text, heard or read.

4 Waiting for Wings Before Reading The teacher will reinforce concepts of printed words and/or models a new reading strategy.

5 During Reading Waiting for Wings
The teacher will show the cover of the book and the title and read the author’s name to the students. She will ask students to predict what the book is about. Guided Questions: What do you think this book is about? What kind of insects are these? What do we know about butterflies?

6 During Reading the Story
Waiting for Wings During Reading the Story The first time reading the book, the teacher will read with enthusiasm and without stopping. Students will enjoy the story. The second time, the teacher will point to the words of the story as she reads them again. Students know they are invited to read along if they want.

7 After Reading Waiting for Wings
The teacher encourages responses about the text. She will ask the children to share their favorite part of the book and referring back to the text. Teachers share for understanding as an informal assessment.
