Bell Ringer: Thursday, January 19th
Do you have Huck Finn with you? If not, get it NOW! Today is the last day for me to sign your class sheets – get them out now. Copy down the vocab for today: Loll (verb) Definition: To recline or lean in a relaxed or lazy way Sentence: During finals week, lolling on the couch all day and not studying is NOT a good idea! When you receive your graded essay, write in your bell ringer: What are you going to improve on for your midterm? List at least 3 specific things, using both my advice and the advice of your peers. When you are finished, get your homework on your desk.

Biggest problem on your essays?
The CON!!! Let’s look at a few examples…
3
Example: Opponents of the dress code may argue that such a code would limit students’ self-expression and stifle creativity. Students pride themselves on being who they are, and without the chance to wear what they want, it’s true: they may feel very trapped.

Students pride themselves on being who they are, and without the chance to wear what they want, it’s true: they may feel very trapped. But is self-expression really that important?

Opponents of the dress code may argue that such a code would limit students’ self-expression and stifle creativity. Students pride themselves on being who they are, and without the chance to wear what they want, it’s true: they may feel very trapped. However, uniforms can help bolster school pride. Wearing a neat and professional-looking uniform can help the school environment improve.

Students pride themselves on being who they are, and without the chance to wear what they want, it’s true: they may feel very trapped. However, clothing is not the only avenue that students can use to express individuality. With uniforms, creative expression could be focused less on something superficial like outward appearance. Instead, students could meaningfully express their creativity through their schoolwork, art, and interactions with others.

In groups… You must come up with a tableaux (freeze frame) for your chapter. If you wish, you may create up to 2 different tableaux. 2 minutes – review the chapter and pick out what is important: what are you going to show in your tableaux? 3 minutes – practice! YES, you must actually get into the freeze frame with your group. All group members must be in the tableaux, besides ONE – this person will be the “explainer”. Explainer – be ready to explain EVERYTHING in the tableaux. 5 minutes – we will present the tableaux and analyze. This is your review of what happened in last night’s reading.

5 minutes to share… 1’s – be ready to share for family
Pap is a drunk (6) Huck’s father demands money of him (14). Huck’s father seems jealous of him – this is kind of backwards (14). 2’s – be ready to share for morality Tom wanted to mess with Jim; Huck seems to have some idea that this is “wrong” (4-5) Huck thinks prayer is a waste of time; doesn’t really understand it (8-9) Huck doesn’t want to go to the “good place” but he does seem to be a loyal person. He values friends (i.e. he would rather go to hell with Tom) 3’s – be ready to share for home Thatcher tries to get Huck moved into his/Watson’s care permanently, but he can’t. Officially, Huck’s still under the custody of Pap. Huck would prefer to sleep in nature/in the woods than to be in “civilization” and sleeping in a bed. He’s USED to the “uncivilized” life. (9) 4’s – be ready to share for supernatural/superstition Salt – Huck’s superstition (12) Jim’s hairball
