1 Describe the structure of this fire station.

2 C E L L S EQ: Explain how cells are the basic unit of structure in all living things.

3 Cells are the basic units of structure and function in all living things.

4 2 Types of Cells Prokaryotic – Does NOT have a nucleus
Eukaryotic – DOES have a nucleus Pro – No / Eu (You) – Do

5 Cells and Structure When you describe the structure of an object, you describe what it is made of and how its parts are put together. The structures of living things are determined by the variety of ways in which cells are put together. Example: Muscle cells vs. skin cells

6 Cells and Function An organism’s functions are the processes that enable it to stay alive and reproduce. Some functions in organisms include: obtaining oxygen, getting rid of wastes, obtaining food, and growing.

7 One square centimeter of your skin’s surface contains more than 100,000 cells.

8 The microscope made it possible for people to discover and learn about cells.
A simple microscope contains one lens, similar to glasses. A compound microscope has more than one lens.

9 1663 – Robert Hooke Robert Hooke, one of the first people to observe cells, built his own compound microscope and observed a thin slice of cork. The empty spaces in the cork looked like tiny rectangular rooms. Therefore, Hooke called them cells, meaning “small rooms.”

10 1674 - Anton van Leeuwenhoek
Anton van Leeuwenhoek looked at several materials, including lake water, and found a variety of one-celled organisms. He called the moving organisms animalcules, meaning “little animals.”

11 Cell Theory Theodor Schwann, Matthias Schleiden, and Rudolf Virchow developed the cell theory. The Cell Theory States All living things are composed of cells. Cells are the basic units of structure and function in living things. All cells are produced from other cells.

12 Before you leave class…
Explain how cells are the basic unit of structure in all living things on a note card.

13 The wacky history of cell theory - TedEd
