ATP helps cells to build molecules and move materials into and out of the cell

Cells can “spend” ATP but they constantly have to work to make more ATP so they don’t run out.

Energy is released when the bond between the last two phosphate groups is broken

8. ADP (Adenosine Diphosphate)
Created when the 3rd phosphate group is removed from ATP
This is the “uncharged” form of ATP
To “recharge” it, the 3rd phosphate group must be reattached
(this happens during cellular respiration)

Food contains macromolecules that can be broken down to make ATP
Plants and animals perform Cellular Respiration to convert the energy stored in food into ATP
