Darwin and the Beagle Charles Darwin was a naturalist on the HMS Beagle. The Beagle was a British ship that circumnavigated the globe.

Darwin noticed that some of the fossils he collected look similar to still living organisms. Others looked nothing like he had ever seen.

The Galápagos Islands Archipelago composed of numerous islands with different climates. Animals and plants of the islands differed from those of other islands.

Hutton’s Geological Change
Hutton proposed that geological processes shaped the Earth. Plate shifting can cause valleys and mountains to form. Rain, cold, and heat can break rocks and move earth.

Lyell’s Principles of Geology
Lyell stressed that scientists must explain the past by processes seen today. Earthquakes can create mountains and valleys, and erosion can create canyons. For these changes to occur, the Earth had to be extremely old.

Lamarck’s Evolution Proposed evolution through use and disuse of organs. Always evolve towards perfection and complexity. Offspring acquire traits.
