FEDERALISM ARTICLE IV IN CONSTITUTION

2 fEDERALISM Power is divided between national and state governments.

3 I control what happens in my state!
Reserved powers I control what happens in my state! Powers given to the states.

4 I, along with Congress have the real power!
Delegated powers Powers of the national government that are: expressed (collect taxes, regulate trade, raise a military, coin money, etc.) implied (prevention of radical discrimination, building of interstate highway, etc.) Inherent (regulate immigration and protect the nation against attempts to overthrow government) I, along with Congress have the real power!

5 Concurrent powers Powers held by both the states and the national government.

6 Supremacy clause Assures that the federal government has final say if states overstep their bounds.

7 Federal governments obligations to the states
Assure a democratic government. Protect them from invasion and violence. Respect their territorial integrity.

8 Relationships among the states
Respect laws and decisions of other states. People visiting from other states will be treated fairly. Extradite – criminals who flee across state lines to escape justice must be returned to the state in which the crime was committed. Interstate Compacts – States must settle their differences amongst each other, if they can’t they can go to court. Admitting a new state must follow a certain procedure – territory, constitution, etc.
