3. Systems Within the Body
Determine which organ systems are working together in each of the following scenarios.
Which organ systems are working together in this scenario?
When you finish exercising, you are hot, tired, and sweating. After a bottle of juice, you feel a lot better.
Which organ systems are working together here?
When you run, you begin to breathe heavier and faster. Your heart beats more quickly, bringing more oxygen to your cells.
Which two organ systems are working together to raise the weights?
When you lift weights, your arms bulge and your brain signals them to lift despite the resistance.

5. Tissues Tissues are made up of specialized cells
These specialized cells allow for the tissue to perform specific tasks
Example:
Muscle tissue is made up of cells that contract to help the body move
Nerve tissue is made up of cells that carry signals to and from our brain

6. Epithelial Tissue
Epithelial Tissue- is made up of tightly packed cells that cover body surface and line the body’s internal organs and cavities
Can be a single layer of
cells or many layers
of cells

7. Epithelial Tissue Epithelial tissue with one layer of cells:
Thin allowing material to pass through
Ex. gas exchange within the lungs
Epithelial tissue with many layer of cells:
Thick to provide protection
Ex. human skin

8. Connective Tissue
Connective tissue- is made up of both specialized cells and non-living substances.
Function: supports, and connects the body’s organs

9. Connective Tissues Examples of connective tissues:
Blood Bones + Ligaments Cartilage
The bone is made up of bone cells surrounded by non-living material.
Bones are connected to each other by elastic ligament tissue. Bone are connected to muscles by inelastic tendons.
Blood connects body systems by bringing oxygen and nutrients throughout the body
Cartilage cells make up a dense but flexible network

10. Nerve Tissue
Nerve Tissue- specialized tissue that makes up the brain, nerves, and spinal cord
Function: Carries electrical signals to and from the brain to control body function

11. Nerve Tissue Three kinds of nerve cells
Sensory neurons- nerves in you skin or sense organs carry information from the body to brain
Motor neurons -carries instructions from brain to spinal cord to the body- usually muscles
Interneuron-the nerves connects the sensory and motor neurons

12. Muscle Tissue
Muscle Tissue- specialized tissues made up of cells that shorten or contract to allow movement

13. Summary Epithelial tissue- lines and covers surfaces
Connective tissue- protect, support, and bind together
Muscular tissue- produces movement
Nervous tissue- receive stimuli and conduct impulses
