6. Who were the Puritans?
Religious group that had very strict rules for living. Persecuted in England, they sought religious freedom by founding Plymouth colony in Massachusetts in the year 1620.

7. Before the landing at Plymouth, who will govern?
Since the King of England persecuted the Puritans, they did not want to become a royal colony. Instead, before leaving their ship, the Mayflower, the men signed an agreement on how to vote on laws for the colony.
This agreement was the first written laws in America, and is known as the Mayflower Compact.

8. Instead of the King having power, the Mayflower Compact gave the people power to self govern through voting.
This principle of popular sovereignty would guide the Founding Fathers in writing the US Constitution.
