BIOCHEMISTRY

pH Percent of Hydrogen Ions 0-14 scale 0 - 6.9 Acid (H)
Base (-OH) Percentage of Hydroxide Ions 7.0 NEUTRAL
4
Acids and Bases Pure water has equal number of hydrogen (H+ ions) and Hydroxide (OH- ions)
Acid: Molecules that release H+ ions in water The more acidic something is the more H+ ions there are Base: Molecules that take up H+ or release Hydroxide Ions (OH-) The more basic something is the more OH- ions there are

pH Buffers Keeps the pH constant by absorbing OH- ions or H+ ions
This is so the pH change is small Helps body keep homeostasis Human body produces natural anti-acids to help keep the pH of the digestive tract in check.
6
Essential Questions 1. What do the letters pH stand for?
Percent of Hydrogen ions 2. Explain why your body needs buffers. So the body maintains homeostasis during the chemical reactions that take place in the body.
7
Quiz: Biochemistry A measurement system that indicates the concentration of H+ ions in a solution. A solution that contains more H+ than pure water. A solution that contains less H+ than pure water. The pH of pure water. Solutions that prevent sudden changes in pH.
