HUBRIS Greek word for "arrogance or pride“
Often leads to a character's demise (death). Hubris is a negative: not just pride, but excessive pride and over-confidence. Examples: Bill Gramatica (Cardinals field goal kicker) Not studying for a test because you think you’ll do well…and then failing

LEVEL 1 – LITERAL INTERPRETATION Two animals race The slow tortoise continues at normal, but consistent pace The fast rabbit takes a nap on the track The tortoise wins, rabbit loses

LEVEL 2 – SYMBOLIC INTERPRETATION TORTOISE – not rushing, consistent, doesn’t give up HARE – Overconfident, lazy, H______S MORAL - Slow and steady wins the race!

Disease that attacks the lungs Cough blood, eventually die This disease is VERY common in literature from HUGE PROBLEM – many died

The Masque of Red Death Although it is most commonly mentioned in those times, still a problem today WHO (World Health Organization) estimates 8 million a year have it, 2 million a year die from it

The Masque of Red Death Effects a lot of people not only the sick, but families Slow death wheezing, coughing up blood, fainting can’t eat
