Changes to Data Elements
A Record Elimination of some submission types The options would be: ABCDEFGIJ ACDEFIJ ABG Divisions who do not have I or J records will still be able to use the ABCDEFIJ submission type Streamlines our processes and makes it faster to run files

B Record Changes Teacher Birthdate will stay retired Licensure found an alternative method of collecting this data Addition of First Year Teacher flag “Y” if the individual has less than one year full-time teaching experience in a public or an accredited non-public school Needed by Licensure for federal reporting under ESSA Will be added as an additional field instead of reactivating teacher experience fields

C Record Changes Drop the SCED Subject Area and replace it with the SCED Course Number Reporting the entire code makes it easier to locate classes Leading zero will be dropped at VDOE, but can be submitted by divisions Example: 1001 for English – Grade 9; for Prekindergarten Retirement of the SCED Course Identifier, SCED Course Level, and SCED Grade Span/Available Credit No longer needed in MSC, but will still be used on transcripts

C Record Changes Reconfiguration of the SCED Sequence Will be used to identify classes taken in parts (like semesters) instead of being used to identify specific courses Addition of Virginia Extended Description This field will decipher between courses using the same SCED code Examples include: Leveled courses (levels I, II, III, etc. as well as 18/36 week courses) Pre-IB courses (PreIB) Grade Level courses (Gr6, Gr7, Gr8 used for fine arts) Foreign Language courses (FLES, MS)

C Record Changes Addition of the Associated Test Code Will use the same codes as the SOL test codes Examples: 3103 for Grade 3 Reading for Algebra I/Geometry Will be used to determine if a class has an SOL test attached to it Required because we do not currently have this information available Especially important for Integrated Math and Science classes Multiple SOL tests can be reported under one course Retirement of the Virginia Course Code field

D Record Changes Retirement of the Highly Qualified Code and Flexibility Criteria Flag No longer needed as Virginia starts to comply with ESSA starting next year

F Record Changes Addition of Credit Awarded Flag Indicates that the student passed the classroom portion of the course and received credit or passing the course Will be “Y” for credit courses where a student received credit for the course; all other courses will have an “N” Elementary and middle school courses will be an “N” because they are not credit bearing

G Record Changes First Year Administrator Flag “Y” if the individual has less than one year full-time experience in this role in a public or an accredited non-public school Move from Assistant Principal to Principal would require a “Y” Needed by Licensure for federal reporting under ESSA Will be added as an additional field instead of reactivating administrative experience fields

Prior to Secondary codes will now have a different Subject Area to match the Secondary Subject Area Example: 51 for English will now be 01 Most Secondary codes will stay the same Final version of crosswalk is available on the MSC page

Virginia Course Codes will no longer be valid The VA Course Code field will be retired completely The field will become a filler field General grade level codes (grades 1-8) will no longer be available for use Example: Grade 2 must now be broken down into subjects (i.e. Grade 2 Reading, Grade 2 Mathematics, etc.) Pre-K and Kindergarten codes still may be used

Local Elective Use Please review your local elective courses to make sure you are using the correct code Local elective codes should not be used unless absolutely necessary We will be reviewing the use of these codes to make sure that they are correctly used

Report Change The STEM report will be included in the Fall MSC verification report Both pages must be signed by your Superintendent The STEM report should be signed by your CTE director

MSC Dates EOY MSC verifications due September 30th (no resubmissions after October 15th) Fall MSC will open on October 15th Fall MSC successful submission is due on December 9th Fall MSC verifications are due on January 31st
