2 THE GAME

3 Basketball is played by millions of people, both men and women, in all parts of the world. Professional basketball is watched by millions more on TV.

4 The Object of Basketball
The object of the game is to score the greatest number of points in the allotted time limit. A game consists of four eight minute quarters. Each team has five players and the game is begun with a jump ball in the center restraining circle.

5 How Basketball Works Basketball is played on a rectangular court that is 92 ft by 49 ft. The height of the basket is 10 ft. The free throw line is 15 feet from the basket.

8 POSITIONS Point Guard – Best Ball Handler, runs offense, shortest player on the floor Shooting guard – best shooter, good ball handler Small forward – Can handle the ball, best all-around athlete. Power forward- Good rebounder Center – Biggest man on the floor, best post player and rebounder

9 SCORING

10 Field Goal – A goal made anywhere inside the three-point line
Field Goal – A goal made anywhere inside the three-point line. ( worth 2 points) Three-point field goal – A goal made anywhere on the court beyond the three-point line. ( worth 3 points)

11 Free throw – An unguarded throw for goal by a player after a foul
Free throw – An unguarded throw for goal by a player after a foul. It is taken behind the free throw line and the shooter has ten seconds to release the attempt. When you are fouled in the act of shooting, a player receives two free throws if the attempt at the goal is missed. You receive three free throws for a three point attempt. If the basket is made in either of the previous circumstances you receive one free throw. ( Worth 1 point)

12 SKILLS Bounce pass - a two-handed pass that bounces off the floor before it reaches the receiver Chest pass - a two-handed pass thrown from chest height

13 Dribble - To bounce the ball repeatedly with one hand while running or walking
Rebound - get control of a ball that has come off the rim or backboard after a failed shot attempt

14 Shots and Passing Players shoot for goal with a set shot if both feet are on the ground, or with a jump shot if the player is in mid-air. Other shots are the lay up (shooting, often off the backboard, while moving towards the basket) and the slam dunk (shooting straight down from above the basket).

16 Violations Traveling – moving illegally with the ball.
Three second lane violation – An offensive player with or without the ball remains in the free throw lane (key) for more than three seconds.

17 Violations 5 Second Rule- A player being
closely guarded can not hold the ball for more than 5 seconds. 10 Second Rule – The ball must cross half court before 10 seconds elapse.

18 FOULS

19 Holding – A player holds an opponent with or without the ball.
Blocking - an individual foul involving personal contact which impedes the progress of an opponent with or without the ball. Holding – A player holds an opponent with or without the ball. Charging – a player with the ball moves into an opponent whose position is legal.

20 TERMS Dead ball – the ball is dead whenever the whistle is blown
Turnover – any loss of possession without a shot being taken Defending the goal – protecting the basket to prevent an opponent from scoring

21 TERMS Out of bounds – the ball is out when it touches any person or object on or beyond the boundary lines.

22 DEFENSE

23 Zone Defense – a defensive system in which players cover assigned court areas, rather than specific individuals. Man to Man defense – a defensive system in which each player guards an assigned individual

25 Famous Players Michael Jordan- A former US player named "the greatest player of all time" by the NBA. He joined the NBA's Chicago Bulls in 1984 after an outstanding career at the University of North Carolina. He won the NBA championship with the Bulls in 1991, 1992, 1993, 1996, 1997 and He also won two Olympic gold medals with U.S. basketball teams in 1984 and 1992. Yao Ming- a Chinese player who went to the U.S.A. and joined the NBA's Houston Rockets. Standing 7'6" tall (2.29 m), he is one of the tallest players in the history of the NBA. After joining the NBA draft in 2002, he was picked by the Houston Rockets and became the first player without any American basketball experience to be selected first overall in the draft. Yao Ming has a huge following in China, and he has increased interest in basketball in China and throughout Asia. Can you name any one else?
