Early French Settlers How They Survived
2
French Ribbon Farm in Detroit
“Detroit” is a French word that means straight. Ribbon Farms are long narrow land divisions, usually lined up along the waterway. In Detroit they were about 250 ft. wide and up to three miles long. Farmers lived at the end of the lots rather than the village. French Ribbon Farms strike an economic balance. (Living by the farm and having neighbors saved). These farms were platted (divided in long rectangles that were easy to survey). detroithistorical.org/learn/encyclopedia-of- detroit/ribbon-farms
