The Structure of the Solar System
2
What is the Solar System?
3
Objects in the Solar System
4
Terms The Sun-Largest object in the solar system, our star.
Objects that orbit the sun- Planets-has a near spherical shape and its mass must be larger than the total of all the objects that orbit near by. There are 8 planets in our solar system. Inner: made of mostly solid rocky material Outer: made mostly of ice and gases Dwarf planets: a spherical object that orbits the sun and has less mass than the objects near it Asteroids: small rocky objects that orbit the Sun and have odd shapes. Most are found in the Asteroid Belts between Mars and Jupiter. Comets: made of gas, dust and ice and moves around the sun in an oval orbit
5
The Astronomical Unit A measurement (AU) used for very large distances in space
6
The Motion of the Planets
Revolution The time it takes an object to travel once around the sun. Rotation The time it takes an object to spin once around on its axis.
7
Planetary Orbits and Speeds
Planets orbit in a stretched out circle=ellipse=elliptical orbit Planets speed of revolution various with its distance from the sun. The closer the planet is to the Sun, the faster it moves.
