What is Power?
2
What is power? Power is how quickly work is done
The more quickly a person or object does work, the more powerful they are. Example: Two weightlifters do 100 joules of work. The first weightlifter does the work in 20 seconds and the second one does the same work in 10 seconds. The second weightlifter is more powerful.
3
How can I calculate power?
Power can be calculated by dividing the amount of work done by the time needed to do the work. The formula is: Power = work (in joules) time (in seconds) Power is measured in a unit called watts
4
Example: You do 200 Joules of work in 20 seconds. How much power did you use? Power = work time Power = 200 J 20 s Power = 10 watts
5
Try calculating power! A teacher does 100 J of work in 20 s. How much power did he use? Power = work time Power = 100 J 20 s Power = 5 watts
6
In the course of a short car race, a car does 500 J of work in 25 seconds. What is the power of the car during the race? Power = work time Power = 500 J 25 s Power = 20 watts
