Ionic and covalent compounds

Recognizing and writing
How do you tell what type of bond you have? If the first element is a metal or a polyatomic ion, you have an ionic bond. If the first element is a non-metal it is a covalent bond.

What type of bond is each of these? NaCl CH4 Ammonium nitrate H2O Carbon dioxide propane
4
Recognizing and writing
What is different between ionic and covalent compound names and formulas? Ionic compounds have only one correct formula, so they have one way of being written. Covalent compounds can have several atomic arrangements.
5
Recognizing and writing
What about acids? Acids are ionic bonds starting with hydrogen. Elemental form is hydro-____ acid. Polyatomic form is either _____-ic acid (-ate ion) or ______-ous acid (-ite ion).
6
Recognizing and writing
What do you need to do when writing and naming compounds? 1. recognize the type 2. realize the different rules for each type 3. follow the rules for formulas and names

Recognizing and naming
How do we determine if a proposed reaction will actually happen? If an atom is more reactive (activity series) than one in a compound, it will replace it. Page 293
