Détente: Détente is a policy of lessened Cold War tensions that replaced brinkmanship. Détente grew out of a philosophy known as realpolitik

The Cold War lasted over 40 years. It was a product of differing political & economic views between the two superpowers The U.S. and Soviet Union both endured enormous costs do to continuous financial and military endeavors around the world Who suffered the most financially during the Cold War: The U.S. or the Soviet Union?

The Cold War is thawing…
Mikhail Gorbachev became leader of the Communist Party in 1985. At 54, he was the youngest Soviet leader since Joseph Stalin. Gorbachev introduced new policies to try and save the crumbling Soviet Union. Describe what you think some of those policies might look like?

Glasnost: Glasnost was a policy to encourage Soviet citizens to openly exchange information and ideas. Criticizing the government was no longer illegal

Perestroika: Perestroika was a policy to reconstruct the economy.
The government would have less control over decisions and individuals could own businesses

Democratization: Democratization was a policy to gradually open the political system. It would end the exclusive control by the Communist party

“New thinking”: “New thinking” in foreign affairs was a policy to reduce Soviet interference in Eastern Europe. It also sought to end the costly arms race with the West
