Mikhail Gorbachev became leader of the Communist Party in 1985. At 54, he was the youngest Soviet leader since Joseph Stalin. Gorbachev introduced new policies to try and save the crumbling Soviet Union. Describe what you think some of those policies might look like?

10 Glasnost: Glasnost was a policy to encourage Soviet citizens to openly exchange information and ideas. Criticizing the government was no longer illegal

11 Perestroika: Perestroika was a policy to reconstruct the economy.
The government would have less control over decisions and individuals could own businesses

12 Democratization: Democratization was a policy to gradually open the political system. It would end the exclusive control by the Communist party
