Synthesizing Source Material
Summer Bridge 2012 Synthesizing Source Material

Putting Together Your Presentation
Now that you’ve got your sources and you’ve completed your works cited page, it’s time to get to work putting together your presentation. Remember that your presentation should be based on your hypothesis (your thesis statement). Your purpose is to prove your hypothesis through your 5 scholarly sources and your two media examples.
3
Structure After reading through your source material, you should start to see some areas where the sources speak to each other or overlap in some way. This will help guide you in structuring your presentation. Do two of your articles mention the way that zombie movies illustrate our fear of anonymity? If so, you would use (quote, paraphrase, or summarize) from those sources when you’re discussing that issue. This is how the sources get meshed together, or synthesized.
4
Some points to keep in mind
Remember to integrate your sources. Don’t list and summarize—rather, use them to show your readers that your hypothesis is valid. Don’t let the source material take over; it is supposed to support you, not the other way around.
