Our goal is to read the words without sounding them out, but do encourage your child to practice sounding them out, if still needed. By the end of first grade, your child needs to be able to read 30 nonsense words in 1 minute, which will take a lot of practice! Fluency Practice: It is not just important for your child to be a reader, but to be a fluent reader. Fluency is defined as the ability to read with speed, accuracy and proper expression. Young readers should be able to read with automaticity, a smooth, natural tone, rather than with a choppy word-by- word uncertainty. This must be practiced! For this reason, please use the same passage all month. It has been chosen based on your child’s DRA level. The first read will most likely be choppy for many students, so continued practice will help. If your child reads very briskly, remind him/her to use expression so that he/she is interesting to listen to. Sight Words: Please continue to practice reading and writing our 1st Grade sight words. Please let me know if you need another copy. Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday MONDAY MATH: DreamBox Lesson Homework should take no more than 20 minutes per night. TUESDAY TIMED READ: Nonsense Words Leveled Passage specially prepared for your child WEDNESDAY WORD WORK: Practice the phonics skill (word sort or phonics story) in your R.E.D. Folder today. THURSDAY RazKids: Choose 1 story to read and 1 story to listen to. Complete the quizzes at the end. FRIDAY FAMILY FUN: OPTIONAL: Disguise a Turkey Family Project More info to come!
