Rainbows!
2
What is dispersion? Dispersion is the separation of light into different frequencies (colors)
3
How to find a rainbow: Raindrops will act as prisms when the sun is shining in one part of the sky and it is raining in another part Stand with your back to the sun to see the rainbow
4
How rainbows are formed:
Light enters the water droplet and is refracted as it travels to the back of the drop. Some of the light is reflected off the back of the drop.
5
How rainbows are formed:
The reflected rays travel back across the raindrop. The water refracts the frequencies more before sending the light out of the drop.
6
How we see rainbows We see one frequency per raindrop.
The other frequencies are out of our line of sight. All rainbow are circular, but…..
7
How we see rainbows …but usually the ground gets in the way.
Rainbows look flat because we don’t have any visual clues to tell where the back of the rainbow is.
8
Random Rainbow Facts: Rainbows move with you because as you move you see different frequencies from raindrops. You can never get to the end of a rainbow. (Sorry. )
9
Random Rainbow Facts If the raindrops reflect the light twice, a double rainbow forms.
