Back to School Night Welcome To Mrs. Handshy’s 2nd grade

My Goal My goal is for each child in this class to leave 2nd grade with the skills and confidence necessary for life long learning

My Role My role as your child’s teacher is that of facilitator and guide. My students and I share the learning experience in a supportive environment. Each child has unique strengths and needs. I differentiate instruction to make learning authentic and meaningful for each young scholar.

Rules of conduct are necessary for optimal learning! The Pillars of Good Character support the other two classroom rules. #1 Do Not Stop Me From Teaching #2 Do Not Stop Others From Learning

I believe in rewarding exemplary behavior!
Tickets are given to students that exhibit behaviors consistent with the six pillars of good character. On Fridays I pull five tickets from the basket and lucky winners earn a trip to the prize box. Scholar Tickets also earn special privileges. 5/24/2019

Birthdays celebrated at the end of a child’s special day
please follow the district food recommendations when planning your child’s celebration birthday party invitations may only be distributed at school if everyone in the class is invited, otherwise, please mail your invitations to avoid hurt feelings.

The daily Homework Folder and Reading Homework Bag must be brought to school each day.
These organizational “tools” are important for children learning how to be responsible and accountable for their learning.

Library Our class is scheduled to go to the Tularcitos School Library each Friday at 11:40. Please help your child be responsible for returning library books each week so she/he may check out a new one.

Home Education (Homework) (All 2nd Graders have the same homework packet.)
The second grade homework will consist of nightly: reading spelling activities and writing math practice pages Homework Goes home: MONDAY – Due: FRIDAY

A completed homework packet consists of: Finished math and spelling pages with name on each page and a parent’s initials Reading Scholars must return their reading book daily as we often use the stories for more than one day and they are needed for rereading Please keep their scholarly behaviors book nearby and continue to support these behaviors at home!

Home Education (cont.) Dictionary skills are a state standard for 2nd graders. All 2nd graders will need to have a children’s dictionary at home. We recommend a D.K. Children’s Illustrated Dictionary or Scholastic Children’s Dictionary

Fieldtrips 2nd Grade students will experience a variety of off campus fieldtrips throughout the year. These trips are planned to specifically support 2nd grade state standards by providing students a hands-on experience with experts in their fields. If you are interested in chaperoning on any of our fieldtrips, please let me know.

Parent Volunteers Your child’s education is team effort. Not only are parent volunteers wanted, they are a vital part of the reading and math program. Parent volunteers make it possible for me to work in small groups with students in guided reading and math at each child’s appropriate level.
