Shay Church Is currently an assistant professor at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia. He received his Master’s of Fine Arts in 2007 from San Jose State University in San Jose California. His work focuses on ceramics and sculpture. His Whales are unfired clay structures built on wooden armatures. As the clay begins to dry it cracks and can flake creating a work that evolves and changes. What do you think your reactions would be approaching this art work? Do you think Church’s choice of materials to exhibit a beached whale is a good choice? Why or why not?

Sand Hill Cranes by Shay Church
Church’s latest work focuses on the Sand hill cranes and the changing environment of their migration routes. These are fired and glazed ceramic sculptures. Some are mounted on the wall others are raised on blocks of wood. What impression does this artist create about this bird’s environment in this piece? Is there evidence of man’s intervention?
