Suffered Under Pontius Pilate; Was Crucified, Dead, and Buried; Descended into Hell

Now I want to make clear for you, brothers and sisters, the gospel I preached to you, which you received, on which you have taken your stand and by which you are being saved, if you hold to the message I preached to you—unless you believed in vain. 1 Corinthians 15:1–8 CSB

For I passed on to you as most important what I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, 1 Corinthians 15:1–8 CSB

and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the Twelve
and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the Twelve. Then he appeared to over five hundred brothers and sisters at one time; most of them are still alive, but some have fallen asleep. 1 Corinthians 15:1–8 CSB

Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles
Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles. Last of all, as to one born at the wrong time, he also appeared to me. 1 Corinthians 15:1–8 CSB

The Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the virgin Mary; Suffered under Pontius Pilate; was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell; The third day He arose again from the dead…

…He ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; From whence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; The Holy Catholic Church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; And the life everlasting. Amen.

Suffered Under Pontius Pilate; Was Crucified, Dead, and Buried; Descended into Hell

Under Pontius Pilate

In what other ways has God taken what was mean for evil and used in for good? How about in your life?

Was Crucified

God pronounced a curse on anyone who was hung on a tree.

“If anyone is found guilty of an offense deserving the death penalty and is executed, and you hang his body on a tree, you are not to leave his corpse on the tree overnight but are to bury him that day... Deuteronomy 21:22–23 CSB

for anyone hung on a tree is under God’s curse
...for anyone hung on a tree is under God’s curse. You must not defile the land the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance. Deuteronomy 21:22–23 CSB

The curse was a foreshadow of the way mankind would be redeemed

Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, because it is written, Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree... Galatians 3:13–14 CSB

The purpose was that the blessing of Abraham would come to the Gentiles by Christ Jesus, so that we could receive the promised Spirit through faith. Galatians 3:13–14 CSB

Dead and Buried

And the Lord God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree of the garden, but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for on the day you eat from it, you will certainly die.” Genesis 2:16–17 CSB

There was a good and righteous man named Joseph, a member of the Sanhedrin, who had not agreed with their plan and action. He was from Arimathea, a Judean town, and was looking forward to the kingdom of God... Luke 23:50–56 CSB

He approached Pilate and asked for Jesus’s body
He approached Pilate and asked for Jesus’s body. Taking it down, he wrapped it in fine linen and placed it in a tomb cut into the rock, where no one had ever been placed. It was the preparation day, and the Sabbath was about to begin... Luke 23:50–56 CSB

The women who had come with him from Galilee followed along and observed the tomb and how his body was placed. Then they returned and prepared spices and perfumes. And they rested on the Sabbath according to the commandment. Luke 23:50–56 CSB

He was assigned a grave with the wicked, but he was with a rich man at his death, because he had done no violence and had not spoken deceitfully. Isaiah 53:9 CSB

What does Jesus’ burial with dignity and respect signify?

And Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I entrust my spirit.” Saying this, he breathed his last. Luke 23:46 CSB

Descended into hell

What do you think this phrase is indicating?

Jesus is laying claim to the faithful who were awaiting the fulfillment of the promise.

All these were approved through their faith, but they did not receive what was promised, since God had provided something better for us, so that they would not be made perfect without us. Hebrews 11:39–40 CSB

For Christ also suffered for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring you to God.... 1 Peter 3:18–19 CSB

He was put to death in the flesh but made alive by the Spirit, in which he also went and made proclamation to the spirits in prison 1 Peter 3:18–19 CSB

And he said to him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.”
Luke 23:43 CSB

But Jesus cried out again with a loud voice and gave up his spirit
But Jesus cried out again with a loud voice and gave up his spirit. Suddenly, the curtain of the sanctuary was torn in two from top to bottom, the earth quaked, and the rocks were split.... Matthew 27:50–53 CSB

The tombs were also opened and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised. And they came out of the tombs after his resurrection, entered the holy city, and appeared to many. Matthew 27:50–53 CSB

Now grace was given to each one of us according to the measure of Christ’s gift. For it says: When he ascended on high, he took the captives captive; he gave gifts to people. Ephesians 4:7–10 CSB

But what does “he ascended” mean except that he also descended to the lower parts of the earth? The one who descended is also the one who ascended far above all the heavens, to fill all things. Ephesians 4:7–10 CSB

What gifts did Jesus give to his people?

Suffered Under Pontius Pilate; Was Crucified, Dead, and Buried; Descended into Hell
