Cells and Heredity 7-2.2: Compare the major components of plants and animal cells.
2
All living organisms are made of cells that contain similar structures, there are differences between the structures of the cells of plants and animals. Structures that are common to plant and animal cells are the cell membrane, nucleus, mitochondria, and vacuoles. Structures that are specific to plants are the cell wall and chloroplasts.
3
MAJOR differences between animal and plant cells
Animal Cells No cell wall No chloroplasts Have small vacuoles Plant Cells Has cell wall (for support and gives shape) Have chloroplasts (enables plants to perform photosynthesis to make food) Have one or more larger vacuoles (larger vacuoles help provide shape and allow the plant to store water and food for future use.)
4
Compare the major components of plant and animal cells
Identify the component parts of plant and animal cells Illustrate plant and animal cells to indicate cell structures Classify cells as either plant or animal based on their cell parts
