Phrases What is a phrase?
A phrase is a group of words in a sentence acting as a single part of speech. Phrases do not contain a subject and a verb Prepositional phrase Two parts Preposition Object of Preposition A noun or pronoun We went behind the trees. The Object of a Preposition can be modified by one or more adjectives We went behind several tall trees. The object of a Preposition can be compound We went behind the trees and bushes.

Phrases Prepositional Phrases as adjectives
Prepositional phrase that acts as an adjective is called an adjectival phrase or an adjective phrase. Modifies a noun or pronoun by telling what kind and which one. Comes after the noun or pronoun it’s modifying The meadow with two oak trees is beautiful. The forest ranger with a worried face stopped us. When two adjectival phrases appear in a row, the second adjectival phrase can modify the Obj of the Prep in the first Prep Phrase The skylight on the roof of the house is broken.

Phrases Prepositional phrases as adverbs
When a Prep Phrase modifies a verb, an adverb, or an adjective they are called an adverbial phrase Points out: where, when, in what way, or to what extent Bring your books into the library. Bring where? The class began exactly at 9:00AM. Began when? Modifying a Verb: Rain poured down in heavy sheets. Poured in what way? Modifying an Adjective: The sun was cold for early June. Could in what way? Modifying an Adverb: The fire spread slowly for a forest fire. Spread in iwhat way?

Phrases Adverbial Phrase continued
Unlike Adjectival Phrases, adverbial phrases aren’t always located next to the word it modifies. During the high tide, the boats were docked Docked when? Two or more Adverbial Phrases can also be located in different parts of the sentence and still modify the same word In an instant, the mice ran through the house. Ran when? Ran where?
