1
Silently begin working on your morning article.
If you finish early, you may read a book from the bookshelf.
2
Agenda: No homework. Happy Friday!
Warm Up Make two Frayer models for kinetic energy and potential energy. Use the model below as a guide. Definition in your own words Use it in a sentence Vocab Term Give a non-example (something that might mix people up) Draw an example
3
Energy is anything that can make something move or change.
What is energy? Energy is anything that can make something move or change. Give students 1-2 minutes to come up with their own definition of energy. Add on: Energy is all around you. You hear energy as sound, you see energy as light, you can feel energy in wind. Living organisms need energy for growth and movement.
4
There are many different forms of energy.
( electric sound electromagnetic moving thermal gravitational chemical nuclear
5
There are only two types of energy. Kinetic Energy Potential Energy
how energy moves There are only two types of energy. ( electric sound electromagnetic moving thermal Potential Energy how energy is stored gravitational chemical nuclear
7
Two Types of Energy Potential energy is stored energy
Kinetic energy is energy of movement What does stored mean? That we can find potential energy at the store? Ready to create motion but is not in motion yet How do we get potential energy? By putting work into something we give it potential energy Potential Energy is the energy stored in this baseball when it is in my hand, if I were to throw it in the air than it would have kinetic energy because it is in motion/moving
8
Mechanical Energy = Potential Energy + Kinetic Energy ME = PE + KE
the energy of an object due to its motion or position It is the object’s combined potential and kinetic energy. Mechanical Energy = Potential Energy + Kinetic Energy ME = PE + KE For example, a thrown baseball has mechanical energy as a result of both its motion (KINETIC ENERGY) and its position above the ground (gravitational POTENTIAL ENERGY)
9
Let’s try together… Which picture shows more kinetic energy? Which one shows more potential?
10
Show what you know! You and your partner will be working together to identify if the picture is an example of potential or kinetic energy. You will rotate who holds the card up each time. You must conference together, before holding up your card! Keep your card up until I have given you the “okay.”
11
If students are struggling prompt them by asking whether movement is taking place or not.
Cold call a student to explain WHY their answer is POTENTIAL ENERGY.
17
You Try! You will either receive the Energy Kite or the Sorting Assignment. Complete your assignment independently and silently. TRY YOUR BEST! Use your notes to help you! Raise your hand if you have any questions or need help. If there is time….There are two different activities. Give your “high” students the kite activity and the “lower” students the sorting activity.
18
Exit Ticket What are the two different types of energy?
Define potential energy. Define kinetic energy. Define mechanical energy.
