The Iditarod Race By Ryan

INTRODUCTION The Iditarod started when tons of kids got sick in Anchorage and the doctor was running out of medicine but another town called Nome had the medicine so one person had to deliver the medicine for more than 1,000 miles.

MUSHER My musher is Lance Mackey and he has been racing since birth. He won four races in a row.

DOGS The dog in the race wear booties and a doggy coat. The also wear a harness so they can stay on the sled. Most of the dogs are huskies and 16 dogs are on the harness.

ROUTES & CHECKPOINTS The checkpoints start in Anchorage and end of the race Nome. There are 22 checkpoints. The ending checkpoint is in Nome.

AWARDS Red Lantern AWARD-Presented to the last musher to finish the race. PenAir Spirit of Alaska AWARD - Presented to the first musher to reach McGrath. Wells Fargo Bank Alaska Gold Coast AWARD - Presented to the first musher to reach the “Gold Coast” community of Unalakleet.
