4. 4 Hearing Services To provide specialized support to successfully include students who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing Those students with an impairment characterized by deficits in language and speech development because of diminished or non-existent auditory response to sound Ministry Definition of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Goal

5. 5 Degrees of Hearing Loss Without amplification, only able to understand conversation in a quite setting within a metre of the speaker Difficulty hearing faint or distant speech or conversation in a noisy setting Moderate Loss Mild Loss Without amplification, only able to hear a loud voice if in very close proximity to the speaker. Only aware of loud environmental sounds Severe Loss Without amplification, may hear loud sounds or may not be aware of any sound Profound

6. 6 Referral Process 1. Assessment by an Audiologist* 2. Assessment forwarded to the Principal and SPST 3. School team consults with Hearing Services team and provides the audiology assessment *The Audiologist may recommend: personal hearing aids, personal hearing aids with classroom amplification or classroom amplification only

7. 7 Referral Process SPST will complete a Request for Hearing Services form Parents are asked to complete Permission for Educational Audiology Consultation form All documentation is forwarded to the Teacher of the Deaf Continued

8. 8 Service Provided by the Teachers of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Consultation with SPST and classroom teacher to explain: the audiological assessment and the implications for language learning modifications and strategies for teaching and learning Staff training for the use of specialized equipment Monitor student progress through direct or indirect service

9. 9 Continued Service Provided by the Teachers of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Maintain, order, inventory and house equipment and accessories Liaise with parents, school staff and community agencies Provide in-service and Professional Development

10. 10 Audiology Consultant Support the Boards Hearing Services Resource team members by: Consultation re: student needs Equipment and trouble shooting Equipment fitting and assignment Audiology consultation with regard to: Recommendations from physicians and/or audiologists Attendance at team meetings or IPRC upon request Liaise with parents, school staff and other professionals
