The Oregon Trail

The Basics After Lewis & Clark, explorers and trappers began making other routes West. 2,200 mile trail from Missouri to Oregon. Used by around 400,000 settlers. 5 months for the trip. Used by emigrants moving West. Travelled in Wagon trains

Travel Originally used by fur trappers on horseback
Modified so wagon trains could travel the trail. Many wagons travelled together for safety. Most used a slightly larger farm wagon. Large wagon covered by canvas. Issues: passing over the Rocky Mnts, disease, natives, fresh food.

Great Migration of 1843 700-1,000 emigrants left for Oregon.
Did not leave their wagons for pack animals when they reached the mountains. First group to create a path that was completely passable by wagons.
