Spelling Rule -er EX/ teacher (a person who teaches)
Some root words have suffixes at the end to slightly change the meaning. –er, -or, -ist, -ess all change the word so that it means a person who is or does something. -er EX/ teacher (a person who teaches) -or EX/ actor (a person who acts) -ist EX/ artist (a person who makes art) -ess EX/ hostess (a female person who hosts)
