2. Spelling Rule -er EX/ teacher (a person who teaches)
Some root words have suffixes at the end to slightly change the meaning. –er, -or, -ist, -ess all change the word so that it means a person who is or does something.
-er EX/ teacher (a person who teaches)
-or EX/ actor (a person who acts)
-ist EX/ artist (a person who makes art)
-ess EX/ hostess (a female person who hosts)

The artist is well-know for his paintings of nature.

5. hostess
You have to be quick on your feet and have good management ability to be a good hostess.

6. actress
This actress performed on stage and in film.

7. swimmer

Are you the seller of this bike? How much do you want for it?

9. tutor
Sue’s older sister works as a math tutor.

Sacramento has lots of tourists because it is the state capitol.

Did you hear the organist play his haunting piece of music?

A female lion is a lioness.

A chemist makes substances by mixing together chemicals. He must be an expert in the periodic table.

15. investor
An investor is someone who gives money to a company because he or she believes that the company will do well with a little help.
