4 A peek at England A group of Protestants fled England to practice religion as they saw fit. First went to Holland. Then moved to America. Why was Holland their first destination?

5 Change in name When this group moved to America, they were called Pilgrims. Came across the Atlantic on the Mayflower. click on the map

6 Mayflower Compact Since the Pilgrims landed north of where they intended, they were not under the Virginia Charter. They made their own rules: The Mayflower Compact. Important because it shows that settlers were interested in self-governance.

7 Location Why did Boston become the most important port in New England?

8 First Pilgrims, then Puritans
Two different groups with different ideas Pilgrims wanted to separate from the Church of England. Puritans wanted to fix it. Both tried to do so in North America.

9 Boom Massachusetts Bay Company - 1629
Royal charter to start a colony and self- govern. 11 ships carrying 1,000 Puritans founded Boston. 20,000 people immigrated in the decade that followed. Great Migration

11 The New England Way Puritans were very devoted and conservative.
Values: hard work education representative government

12 Modern Day Connection Boston today remains one of the most educated cities in the United States.

13 Diaspora From Massachusetts, other colonies were formed from people who disagreed with Puritan values. 15 Intolerance A new group emerged: Quakers
Did not believe in Puritan hierarchy Believed in direct experience with God Allowed women to serve as ministers Were banished, then executed by Puritan governments.
