Classification (background knowledge)
Many of these word you should already know
2
Terms to Remember for this Unit:
Classification: The grouping of organisms based on thier similarities OR differences Taxonomy: The study of Classifications (these scientists are called taxonomist) Unicellular: Any one celled organism Multicellular: having many (more than one) cells Autotrophic: (Producers): makes it own food internally through photosynthesis Heterotrophic: (Consumers) must ingest food from the environment
3
Eukaryotes: cells with Nucleus, Endoplasmic Reticulum, golgi bodies, mitochondria, chloroplasts
Prokaryotes: cells with no membrane bound organelles just DNA, RNA, ribosomes, cell wall/membrane Sexual Reproduction: genetic information DNA is exchanged to make new genetically distinct individual - needs two parents Asexual Reproduction: DNA is simply replicated and a the “offspring “ is a genetic clone of the parent- only one parent needed
4
The grouping of organisms based on their similarities
Classification: The grouping of organisms based on their similarities Ex: Tulip Crocodile Elk Rose Oak Lizard Cottonwood Tree Bat Bass 1 possible answer: Tulip + Rose Oak Cotton- Wood Bat Elk Bass Crocodile Lizard Flowers Trees Mammals Reptiles Fish
5
Tulip & Rose Oak & Cottonwood Flowers Trees PLANTS Bat & Elk Lizard & Crocodile Mammals Reptiles ANIMALS Bass Fish
6
We often imply evolutionary relationships based on how we classify life
Biggest differences Reptiles Mammals Fish Flower Tree Smallest differences All Plants All Animals
7
Try to classify into groups:
Sponge Juniper Tree Buffalo Kelp Snail Cactus Jellyfish Mushroom Walrus Yeast Gorilla Banana Tree Platypus Lobster Robin Orchid Corn Octopus
8
Try to classify into groups:
Polar bear Trout Mouse Dolphin Grasshopper Whale Prarie Dog Mountain Lion Toad Cobra Pine Tree Moss Chile Dandelion Crab Turtle Wolverine Bee
