Content Introduction Friability test Method
3
Introduction Tablets are constantly subjected to mechanical shocks during the manufacturing, packing and transportation process. Such stress can lead to capping, aberration or even breakage of the tablets. It is therefore important that the tablet is formulated to withstand such stress.
4
Friability test In order to monitor the resistance of tablets to such stress and to decide on their suitability for further processing such as coating, tablets are routinely subjected to friability test
5
Friability test Friability is defined as the % of weight loss by tablets due to mechanical action during the test. Tablets are weighing before and after testing and friability is expressed as a percentage loss on pre test tablet weight. Friability refers the ability of the compressed tablet to avoid fracture and breaking during transport.
6
Method Select 20 tablets randomly, dedust and weigh (WO).
Place the tablets in the friabilator drum, switch on the apparatus adjusting the timer at 4 min. and the speed at 25 rpm. At the end of this operation, remove the tablets from the friabilator, dedust and reweigh (Wf). (Any tablet that breaks up should be rejected before reweighing). friability is expressed as a percentage loss in weight: N.B., if the value of friability (% loss) is less than or equal to 1%, the batch is accepted.
