Cell variety in relation to function
Chapter 1 Cell variety in relation to function
2
A cell is the basic unit of life
Unicellular organisms only contain one cell eg bacteria
3
Multicellular organisms contain more than one cell (eg humans)
They have cells which are specialised for particular tasks, eg kidney cells or brain cells These groups of cells are known as tissues eg muscle tissue
4
Tissues are grouped into organs which are grouped into systems
5
Alveoli cells (tissue)
Lungs (organ) Circulatory system
6
Cells from different tissues have different appearances because they have different functions
This allows multicellular organisms to perform at a higher level
7
All cells contain a number of small organelles which have particular roles to play eg nucleus and mitochondria NB. Structure is always related to function
8
Textbook – pages 3 & 4 – examples of structures and function
Choose 2 animal and 2 plant cells. Give the tissue they form part of, the specialised features they have and what their function is.
