2 Section 1 A New Deal Fights the Depression
1932 – People were ready for a change. Franklin D. Roosevelt won the election with over 23 million votes He had a “Can-do” attitude which attracted voters. During the 4 month wait between the election and inauguration, Roosevelt picked his advisors, and began to come up with the plan known as the The New Deal

Reforming Banks- closed all bank – The BANK Holiday Banking Relief Act – Glass Steagall Banking Act 1933 – insurance to banks Federal Securities Act – Business to provide information on stocks

5 Helping the Americn People
Agricultural Adjustment Act (AAA)- limited the number crops grown by farmers. Which made prices go up. Civilian Conservation Corps – putting men work. Federal Emergency Relief Administration – 250 million to states to help take of the unemployed elderly and sick.

6 Public Works Administration (PWA)- provided money to states to build schools and community buildings. This created jobs. National Industrial Recovery Act – Fair competition among industries. Improved working conditions, got rid of child labor. Home Owners Loan Corporation – (HOLC) – government loans to home owners who were facing foreclosure.

7 New Deal Comes Under Attack
The American Liberty League – Al Smith, and Al Davis, wealthy people in this group. Opposed measures of the New Deal. Huey Long- one of the biggest challengers to the New Deal. Sentor of Louisana. – Share on wealth program – height of popularity assassinated.

8 Section 2 The 2nd 100 Days or the 2nd New Deal
The gains were not as great as expected. Unemployment was still high. Eleanor told her husband that the poor still needed more help, she knew this because she traveled the country to observe this. The 2nd New Deal was underway at the time of the 1936 election –FDR re-elected.

9 Helping Farmers Farmers were suffering from social and economic conditions. 1936 -Soil Conservation and Domestic Allotment – paid farmers to cut production and good soil conservation. 1938- Agricultural Adjustment Act (AAA)- lower production to raise prices. Tried to help small farmers, sharecroppers, migrant workers, and poor farmers.

10 Helping Youth, Professionals, and Others
Largest Programs under New Deal Works Program Administration (WPA) – create jobs, budget of 5 million, built airports, roads, libraries, schools, and hospitals. Employed teachers, writers, actors, and musicians National Youth Administration (NYA) – provided aid and employment to 2 million high school and college students, by giving them jobs at their schools.

11 Labor and Reform Improving Labor conditions:
National Recovery Act – established working conditions Wagner Act – listed unfair labor practices that companies could not use. Threating workers, firing union members, interfering with unions. National Labor Relations Board – to hear testimony about unfair practices. Fair Labor Standards Act in 1938 – maximum hours and minimum wage. The Social Security Act – passed in Old age insurance, unemployment compensation, and aid to families with dependent children and the disabled

12 Expanding and Regulating Utilities
Promote rural electrification and to regulate public utilities Only 30% of American Farms had electricity. Rural Electrification Administration – REA – created, financed, and worked with rural and farm electrical cooperatives to bring electric to those without. By % then it rose to 90% by 1951. Public Utilities Holding Company Act of 1935 – outlawed the ownership of utilities by multiple holding companies.
