5 Cause #4 Election of 1860 When Republican Abraham Lincoln won the Election of 1860, Southerners believed that their rights would no longer be respected. Many southerners believed it was time to leave the Union.

6 Cause #4 Secession Secession- the action of withdrawing formally from involvement of a federation, especially a political state After Lincoln’s election, eleven southern states eventually seceded from the Union and formed the Confederate States of America.

10 4 Battles Begin (1861) Fort Sumter (4/12) - Confederates opened fire and this Federal fort surrendered 34 hours later. Union forces would try for nearly four years to take it back. More Secession – When Lincoln calls for volunteers to defeat the rebellion, more Southern state secede (VA, AR, NC, TN)

15 Emancipation Proclamation (Jan 1, 1863)
Executive Order - Lincoln freed slaves in states that were still in rebellion Impact - Frees 50,000 slaves, with the rest freed as Union armies advanced. It did not compensate the owners, outlaw slavery, or make the ex-slaves (called freedmen) citizens. (3.1 million of the 4 million slaves )

16 7 April 1865 -- Surrender at Appomattox Courthouse.
General Lee's troops were soon surrounded, and on April 7, Grant called upon Lee to surrender. On April 9, the two commanders met at Appomattox Courthouse, and agreed on the terms of surrender. Lee's men were sent home on parole -- soldiers with their horses, and officers with their side arms. All other equipment was surrendered.

18 7 April 1865 -- The Assassination of President Lincoln.
On April 14, as President Lincoln was watching a performance of "Our American Cousin" at Ford's Theater in Washington, D.C., he was shot by John Wilkes Booth, an actor from Maryland obsessed with avenging the Confederate defeat. Lincoln died the next morning. Booth escaped to Virginia. Eleven days later, cornered in a burning barn, Booth was fatally shot by a Union soldier. Nine other people were involved in the assassination; four were hanged, four imprisoned, and one acquitted. 7
